ANN AUGUSTINE IN ARTIST - A PERFORMANCE THAT STUNNED US IN 2013

Her husband has just met an accident and the words that came out of Gayathri surprised us. Was it out of shock or was she fed up with the life with her egoistic and self-centric husband that she finally wished he was dead. We never know because the character's perplexed state of mind was conveyed beautifully by Ann. Till I watched Artist recently ,I thought this year's best female performance belonged to Shobana in Thira cosindering that the veteran actress's work was also raved about much in many places. Barring Mamta Mohandas(My Boss, Arike and Celluloid),I also dont remember another young actress in Malayalam who has delivered such an impactful performance in recent times. Ann Augustine was superb in Artist and was several notches above her debut work in Elsamma Enna Ankutty that won her much acclaim. She even stole the show from Fahad Fazil who is just unstoppable these days and who was once again terrific as the blind artist in the movie. Whether its the troubles she goes through to meet the ends for her family or the extreme endurance with she sticks in her relationship despite the fact that it has given her only pain, Ann Augustine was intensely expressive and natural throughout. This actress has immense talent and its definitely not to be wasted in movies like 3 kings
"Ullil murivettathu enikkum koodi anennorkuka.. karanam sneham matram pora namuku jeevikkaneppozhum...Chilappozhokke samayakumbol murivelkendavarku vedanichu thanne theeranam.. Athaanu jeevitham". The closing scene where Ann walks away saying these lines is going to stay with me for some time. My personal pick for the best female performer of 2013 in Malayalam is definitely Ann Augustine. I also hope that she would be the front-runner for winning the state award this year.
